When the Dot NET generic top-level extension was initially established in 1985, along with the first domains on the Internet, it was meant to be used by Internet Service Providers or infrastructure companies. Since there were no special regulations about the usage of the top-level domain extension, though, .NET domains were reserved and used for various purposes and by a huge number of people. This extension is a great alternative to dot COM, particularly if the desired domain with the latter TLD is not available for registration.
